The MI-BIN concept has developed over several years through research into household recycling behaviour, direct exposure to operational waste collection systems, and engagement with professional organisations across the sector. The articles and materials below trace the early thinking and sector insights that helped shape the development of the project.
Where this started
This journey began in 2016, with early engagement across the waste and resources sector looking at and challenging conventional thinking around household recycling, bin design and user behavior.
Professional Networks & Sector Engagement
The MI-BIN project engages with professional organisations and networks that promote best practice in waste management, recycling, and the circular economy.

9TREES
Environmental restoration through practical action
9Trees is a not-for-profit organisation focused on long-term environmental restoration through native tree planting across the UK. Their philosophy is simple and measurable: to plant nine trees per person per year, helping to balance an individual’s personal carbon footprint.
They deliver this by creating sustainable native broadleaf woodlands, planting the right trees in the right places, promoting biodiversity, and enhancing habitat corridors. Beyond environmental benefits, 9Trees actively supports jobs, skills, and training within the local countryside and woodland sector.
As a not-for-profit organisation, 9Trees reinvests income back into education, training, and the long-term management of the woodlands they create — ensuring lasting impact rather than short-term gain.
